Marianne Bourron I 2004

Marianne Bourron
www.soodkay.fr

Tell us a little about your background?
My name is Marianne, I'm 22 years old and I'm a French graphic designer. Soodkay is my graphic name.

Where are you from?
I was born in Grenoble, I have grown in Saint Raphael and now I live in Marseille.

Design education:
I have a Degree in Multimedia & Communication, and I have just finished my Bachelor's Degree in Graphic & Interactive Design. In this kind of school, what you learn is frequently thanks to the others. Studies are an exchange of knowledge between students and it's fantastic!

How did you start out as an artist and designer?
I don't think I'm an artist because I have a technical education on first. I have discovered graphic design during my BA and now I spend all my time in graphic design.

Did you go from creating art and then move into graphic design? Or was it the other way around?
I create graphic design, hope it move into art, and please to the others designers and amateurs.

What softwares do you currently use?
The most are Strator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash & sometimes Director.

Through your years as a print artist what was the most difficult project you ever encountered?
I think that the project the most difficult was to create my own communication because I had to define myself in a design style whereas I love a lot.

What are your thoughts on community sites such as DIK, Computer Love and Pacdesco:
I think its really important to have these communities because they permit designers to make known themselves and to stay in contact with the graphic design world.

If there were one thing you could change about Adobe Illustrator what would it be?
I would like that strator memorizes working palette like text, pantone and pathfinder. Strator is a fantastic soft, it permits to create logo, flash website interface and many others things.

What advice can you offer for those just starting out in the business:
Be curious, look around you and work. I think that if you take pleasure in doing graphism you'll make progress.

What is your all-time favorite movie and why?
I love cinema and it's difficult to choose only one movie for my all-time favorite whereas I love different style. If I had to choose a cult movie, it would be "Pulp Fiction".

Describe your workstation:
I work on pc. I love my pc and I will stay on PC. I'm not against Mac and I don't think there are a lot of differences between PC and Mac in the work but PC is better for web projects. Perhaps if I have bought a Mac on first I still would be on Mac. So, my PC hasn't got wallpaper; on the desktop we can find only the trash and the workstation icons. I love simplicity.

Design styles you dislike:
I respect all design styles. I love matter, vector and abstract works particularly. Design style that attracts me the less is pixel art.

French designers have always been some of the best I've seen. Being from France, why do you think French designers are so creative?
I had never question myself on this subject, perhaps due to the culture and the history, I don't know really why.

Do you have any new projects coming up that you can tell us about?
I have just finished my studies so I'm working like freelance but I'm looking for a job in Marseille and it's hard to find. I'm working on splash for different communities and for me too. In the next time, I'm going to work on a new identity ;-)

Do you think Flash is cool or overused?
Flash is nice and permits to create cool animation. Sometimes, it's probably overused, and it doesn't bring anything. When I made my degree in Multimedia, Flash didn't enjoy me, perhaps because I studied only actionscript. And in my BA, more graphic, I have realized that I could produce nice introduction or animation with the less of programming.

What do you enjoy most, print or web projects?
I like the both, but I have a preference for web projects, maybe due to my first multimedia education. Elaborate ergonomy; create a kind of navigation and interface. Bring me a lot of pleasure. It's definitely my passion. But finally, web project are interactive print for me!!!

Thank you for doing this interview, is there any last comments you would like to add?
Thank you for your attention and having offered me an interview.

“A little while after the release of the first tokyoplastic; it was getting 40,000 hits a day, which was very surprising and cool and made us happy and we received a lot of enquiries from potential clients. Prior commitments meant that it took a whole year just to get to the position where we were able to start accepting the offers.”

“Style is a good thing - but if anything I would like to be as diverse as possible - stylistically. To corner oneself into a certain style only means that one is limited. It's the age-old debate over specialization versus generalization. I find that as a designer - if a client were to present a problem to me, I need to be fully capable of solving that problem in any way possible..”

“I've just been drawing like mad since I was two feet tall, and haven't stopped. When I was younger I was really into cartoons (I'm sure most kids were), and I used to sit in front of the TV for hours drawing what I saw. Then I started making my own characters and drew them in scenarios with the characters I saw in TV. Then I discovered comics and it was all over, ALL of my money went towards those for
the next 8 years....”
