Viviane Fernandes I 2005

Viviane Fernandes
www.designinloco.com.br

Tell us a little about your background:
Since 1996, I've been working as a designer at advertisement agencies, design studios, web studios and publishing companies but I've always been interested in the visual universe and peoples' reaction to art.

Where are you from?
I am from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Design Education:
I'm graduated in Industrial Design with Qualification in Visual Programming at the "Belas Artes" College in Sao Paulo.

Could you share with our viewers the history behind Design In Loco?
Design In Loco is born as a purpose of showing my work and experimentations, focused on graphic design. A search for new languages, perceptions and evolutions, free from preconceptions and commit to taking to account criteria, parameters, factual objectives and emotion, permeating and conducting to effective results in the area.

How would you describe your style of work?
My work style integrates various views and reflects in truth my surrounding references. What I do is to detach these references from their conventional meanings and rereading to stimulate people's interest. It's pretty like if I'd found out a new attribute or usage to some object that surrounded me...sometimes adding to them a bit of humor or nonsense aspect...But more them been worried about style we need to explore the possibilities and converge than in to solutions that attend to the real requirements of targeting or client.

If there were one thing you could change about Adobe Photoshop what would it be?
Adobe Photoshop is one of my favorite software. Wouldn't are to change anything in it.

Did you go from creating art and then move into graphic design? Or was it the other way around?
I've accumulated a visual and artistic background during these years of working and I'e always looked for ranging over new materials and artistic techniques that might serve as subsidies during graphic creations.

Have you ever worked with someone who personally inspired you, if so who and why?
I think I've always worked with inspiring people or that in some extent, criticizing or judging my work were able to contribute to the final out come of projects.

There are many trends that come and go in the Design Industry, what trend do you see that does not look like will last?
I believe any trend related to design without a clear purpose trends to be lost in the space. At all time pops up new tendencies. What really means is designer perception work. No problems in getting evolved with some trend but since it are fulfilled with a justifying concept besides a minimum differential.

What do you feel is the hardest job being a Graphic Designer?
One of the biggest challenges to a graphic designer is having their work recognized. Besides dealing with shortage of time "all the time"and the simplistic parameters of "beauty" or "ugliness" used by some people to discuss about a project.

What do you do besides design?
Moreover than to love design I like to be aware of in touch with any sort of novelty and information that might spring up around me. Enjoy traveling, reading, working out. Having fun with friends, listen to music, playing with my dogs.

At what point did you realize that you could actually make a living out of doing what you do?
I realized I could make a living out of design when people started to pay me for doing one of the most pleasing things for me.

We really appreciate you doing this interview. Do you have any last comments you would like to add?
Thanks for the opportunity to get interviewed!

“A little while after the release of the first tokyoplastic; it was getting 40,000 hits a day, which was very surprising and cool and made us happy and we received a lot of enquiries from potential clients. Prior commitments meant that it took a whole year just to get to the position where we were able to start accepting the offers.”

“Style is a good thing - but if anything I would like to be as diverse as possible - stylistically. To corner oneself into a certain style only means that one is limited. It's the age-old debate over specialization versus generalization. I find that as a designer - if a client were to present a problem to me, I need to be fully capable of solving that problem in any way possible..”

“I've just been drawing like mad since I was two feet tall, and haven't stopped. When I was younger I was really into cartoons (I'm sure most kids were), and I used to sit in front of the TV for hours drawing what I saw. Then I started making my own characters and drew them in scenarios with the characters I saw in TV. Then I discovered comics and it was all over, ALL of my money went towards those for
the next 8 years....”
